A Humongous Quiz (But Not In That Sense)

Humongous Entertainment's point-and-click games of the nineties have been discussed on the blog before, in probably unnecessary detail. For something slightly different, here are some of the puzzles that would have faced a child between the ages of 4 and 10 back in the day; can you, someone who I'm presuming is a grown adult, work out the entirely intuitive and logical solutions? Answers at the bottom of the article.

  1. A bottle you need to retrieve has fallen to the bottom of a canyon and has been claimed as treasure by a bad-tempered fish.
  2. You need to escape from a prison cell made entirely out of sweets and chocolate.
  3. A man you are trying to rescue is suspended over a pool of piranha fish, and cannot be lowered without falling into the pool.
  4. The Sheriff of Briny Gulch is too afraid to deal with the criminals, as he has lost his sheriff's star and doesn't feel brave without it. (Clue: This is a Freddi Fish game.)
  5. A triceratops is sitting on your maths homework.
  6. A Venus Flytrap is attempting to eat an item you need to retrieve, but the gardener won't let you take the flytrap with you.
  7. A bully won't let you take his flashlight.
  8. You can't get a rare variety of fruit past a security guard guarding the patch.
  9. You need to retrieve a golden pipe from a clam, but can't do so without it biting your hand off.
  10. The flashlight you need to retrieve is on a ledge in a mine that is too high for you to retrieve.

ANSWERS
  1. Get a fishing rod and use it to retrieve the bottle. (Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds)
  2. Knock the key that's hanging on a hook outside the cell to the ground by throwing a bon-bon at it. Then break off part of the candy cane cell door and use it as a hook to retrieve the key and unlock the door. (Pajama Sam: You Are What You Eat From Your Head To Your Feet)
  3. Set the pool's temperature to the lowest possible setting, causing it to freeze over. (SPY Fox in Dry Cereal)
  4. Use a starfish as a replacement. (Freddi Fish and the Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch)
  5. Set down some strategically placed piles of hay, so it moves off of your homework to eat the hay. (Putt-Putt Travels Through Time)
  6. Swap the flytrap for a rose, which you obtain by taking part in an ice-skating competition, then offer the flytrap a fly, which will cause it to spit out the item so it can eat the fly. (SPY Fox: Some Assembly Required)
  7. Terrify him by showing him his reflection in a fun-house mirror you won at the carnival. (Freddi Fish and the Case of the Stolen Conch Shell)
  8. First, close the sluice gate on the nearby river. Throw the fruit in the river, walk past the guard, and collect the fruit from by the sluice gate. (SPY Fox: Operation Ozone)
  9. Buy a translation book and speak to a foreign tourist who's trying to get rid of a bizarre device that springs out arms whenever you press the button on it, and persuade him to give you the device. Use it to keep the clam open whilst you retrieve the pipe. (Freddi Fish and the Case of the Stolen Conch Shell)
  10. Get a pickaxe to collect some gold from elsewhere in the mine, and use that gold to get across a bridge in a completely different part of the game, where you get a sentient pencil. Then oil the hinges on a door in yet another area of the game (after first retrieving the oil, obviously) to enter the door and get a hammer from the new area. Go back to the mine, use the hammer to break down the boards across another door, and use the pencil to blow up a wall. Go into the next room, which is pitch black, so you need to find the lightswitch. This all gets you to the section of the game where the flashlight is. There's a winch you can use to reach the flashlight, but it's missing a gear. In yet another section of the game there's a grandfather clock which will give you one of its gears if you can set it to the correct time, which involves finding out the correct in-game time somewhere else. Get the gear, go back to the mines, and use it with the winch to haul the mine cart you're riding in up to a great height. Unhook the winch from the cart and you'll be sent flying, enabling you to pick up the flashlight. (Pajama Sam: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside)
